This guide explains how U.S. taxpayers and Enrolled Agents can file federal tax returns using IRS tools and services.
When to File
The tax deadline for 2024 returns is April 15, 2025. Extra time may be available if:
- You were affected by a federally-declared disaster.
- You're living out of the country on the due date.
Ways to File for Free
- IRS Free File – AGI $84,000 or less.
- Direct File – Prepare and file online for free directly with IRS.
- Free tax services for military and veterans
- IRS-certified volunteers – For eligible taxpayers needing language or other support.
Other Ways to File
- Tax professional – Choose an IRS-approved tax professional.
- Paper forms – Mail Form 1040 or 1040-SR, and Schedule C if business income exists.
- Tax software – Use software to file electronically or on paper.
If You Need More Time
Request an extension by the April filing deadline. Taxes owed must still be paid by the original deadline. Late payment may incur interest and penalties.
