Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return

This guide explains how U.S. taxpayers and Enrolled Agents can request additional time to file a tax return using IRS tools.

Overview

IRS provides a way to request an extension to file your tax return. This gives taxpayers until October 15 to file without penalties. Taxes owed must still be paid by the original April filing date. The extension is only for filing the return.

Ways to Get an Extension

  1. Pay online and check the box: Use an online payment option and indicate payment is part of an extension request. You will receive a confirmation number.
  2. Use IRS Free File: Electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension using IRS Free File. No income limit applies.
  3. Request by mail: File Form 4868 through mail, an IRS e-filing partner, or a tax professional. Estimate your tax owed for the year on the form.

If You’re Outside the U.S.

U.S. citizens or resident aliens abroad on the regular due date automatically receive a 2-month extension. More info: IRS Topic 304.

Disaster-Affected Taxpayers

Taxpayers affected by a disaster may be eligible for additional filing time. More info: IRS disaster relief.

Other Forms for Extensions

  • Businesses or Corporations: Form 7004, Form 1138
  • U.S. citizens/residents abroad: Form 2350
  • Exempt Organizations: Form 8868
  • Retirement Plans: Form 5558
  • Estates: Form 4768, Form 8892
  • Information Return Filers: Form 8809

Summary

The extension only increases the time to file your return, not to pay taxes. Use Form 4868 or IRS Free File to request an extension. Enrolled Agents can assist clients in filing these extensions correctly.
